Developed by the late Joseph Pilates (1880-1967), the Pilates method is a group of mind-body conditioning exercises initially designed for rehabilitation purposes during the early twentieth century. Pilates was later adopted by dancers as its philosophy blended well with their focus on core strength, co-ordination, flexibility and posture.

Pilates is based on a set of principles which exercise the whole body through a range of mat and equipment based exercises. Pilates combines the co-ordination of deep postural and stability muscles, breathing and arm & leg movements with postural correction and flexibility. With regular practice, Pilates positively changes the body.

More recently Pilates has been adopted by athletes, fitness enthusiasts and within the health rehabilitation sector. Pilates provides a unique method of restoring strength, flexibility and function. Pilates is suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Scientific research is beginning to provide evidence of its effectiveness on reducing pain, improving physical function, movement and well being.

As Physiotherapists we recognize the benefits of Pilates for injury prevention and rehabilitation. More than 80% of adults will experience back pain at some stage in their life. When left unmanaged, a high proportion of people will continue to experience further episodes of back pain in future years. One key to preventing recurrences is to rehabilitate and re-train the deep abdominal, pelvic and spinal stability muscles to dynamically support the spine throughout movement.

We believe that through Pilates clients can achieve efficient and effective movement sequencing & co-ordination, prompting quality not quantity, focusing on core stabilization and postural correction.

One to One Pilates Sessions

One to one Pilates is the most effective route to optimal success. Typically, long term injuries are best treated with a combination of Physiotherapy and one to one Pilate’s sessions. This allows for the Physiotherapist to closely assess you and advise on the Pilates exercises best suited for your individual needs. At the time of your assessment, our Physiotherapist discusses your health history and overall aims & goals for undertaking Pilates. An initial consultation with our Pilates Physiotherapist is advised before you join our classes as some injuries will require closer supervision and treatment. Prior to joining the class your Physiotherapist will introduce you to Pilates principles, common positions and key elements.

Mat Pilates Classes

Physio at the lodge offers Pilates sessions by fully trained Physiotherapists who are also experienced Pilates Instructors. Once you have gained the fundamental principles of physiotherapy either via one-to-one sessions or in the class environment your Physiotherapist will teach you basic Pilates mat exercises which will enable you to practice the exercises at home in between supervised Pilates sessions.

The class content is progressive to maximise your improvement and learning of Pilates. These 60 minute classes are held at “the lodge” or in a local community venue.

The classes at the lodge are sold in blocks of six and are kept small (no more than 6) in order to optimise the feedback and supervision given allowing physiotherapist and client to develop individual progressions. Many of our clients find these classes compliment their ongoing rehabilitation.

The community base classes are sold in blocks of 10 or on a pay as you go bases these classes are run for all ages and abilities, all equipment is provided and no previous Pilates experience is needed. Many of our clients find these classes benefit general health and fitness as well as improving overall flexibility and injury prevention.

After years of pain and discomfort and seeing numerous Dr’s, Specialists and Physio’s I’d just about given in to the fact that I’d never be without this pain/discomfort. After just one session with Richard I came away feeling refreshed and hopeful I could be normal again. He recognised my issues almost instantly (which numerous others had missed)and explained everything clearly – a complete breathe of fresh air. I’d have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone.
