What is Pregnancy Pilates?

These specially modified classes are conducted and supervised by an experienced Physiotherapist, and use a sequence of flowing movements designed to maintain strength, flexibility and postural control throughout your entire pregnancy.

Our Physiotherapists use up-to-date evidence based principles and extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology to offer a comprehensive 60-minute antenatal workout, with focus on pelvic floor, breathing control and relaxation also allocated to each session.

We purposely keep our class sizes small (maximum 6 people) so that you get the attention you need to get the most out of the class. This is also a great way for you to meet and get to know other expectant mums!

What are the Benefits of Exercise in Pregnancy?

Regular exercise in pregnancy benefits both you and your baby in these key ways:

  • Reduces back pain
  • Promotes healthy weight gain during pregnancy
  • Eases constipation
  • Improves general fitness, strengthens heart and blood vessels
  • Can help to significantly shorten labour
  • Helps promote faster postnatal recovery

Modified Pilates is a fabulous form of exercise in pregnancy which, in addition to the above, is also known to provide these positive benefits:

  • Lowers incidence of Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP / SPD)
  • Improves postural awareness and maintains flexibility
  • Helps maintain pelvic floor muscle strength and prevent incontinence

Am I Suitable?

Pregnancy Pilates is suitable for any level of fitness in a normal, healthy pregnancy. You do not need to have any previous Pilates experience. It is recommended that you should wait until you are 12 weeks pregnant before starting a new exercise regime, but if you are a regular exerciser or already participate in regular Pilates classes, you may be able to join our classes sooner. We just ask that you discuss and clear this with your GP/midwife first.

After years of pain and discomfort and seeing numerous Dr’s, Specialists and Physio’s I’d just about given in to the fact that I’d never be without this pain/discomfort. After just one session with Richard I came away feeling refreshed and hopeful I could be normal again. He recognised my issues almost instantly (which numerous others had missed)and explained everything clearly – a complete breathe of fresh air. I’d have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone.
